It can happen unexpectedly.

You are talking with someone. Watching a movie. Working on a project. Fishing. Reading. Cooking. Laughing.

Then several hours later you realize something strange. You had not thought about the amputation. Not once.

For a while, your body stopped being the headline.

That moment matters. Not because forgetting limb loss is the goal. Because it proves your identity is expanding again.

In the early stages, amputation can occupy enormous mental territory. Everything connects to it. Appointments. Equipment. Pain. Movement. Clothing. Transportation. Other people’s reactions.

Eventually other things begin reclaiming space. Work. Family. Hobbies. Arguments. Bills. Plans. Football. Bad television. Normal life.

The amputation remains real. It simply stops demanding top billing every hour.

That is a kind of recovery people rarely talk about. Not the dramatic milestone, but the ordinary afternoon when you suddenly realize you were too busy living to think about being an amputee.
